Pharr Aquatic Center
The City of Pharr Parks and Recreation Department is proud to announce that we recently completed the development of a Swimming Pool Feasibility Study. With the assistance of the consulting firm, Aquatic Excellence, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board as well as staff worked diligently to complete this very important document. This plan was intended to identify the needs and priorities of area residents with regard to its swimming pool facilities. After four months of assessing the aquatic complex and Pharr’s demographics, as well as the existing facilities, the consultant recommended new construction versus continuing to provide temporary solutions to the city’s aquatic needs. The benefits of a new facility will include the following:
- Provide quality recreational opportunities to the youth and families of Pharr
- Provide a competition swimming pool for swim team programs for youth as well as high school students
- Continue to provide learn to swim services
- Reduction in the cost of maintaining the swimming pools using city funds
- Increase in revenue due to higher attendance
This will enhance community pride by providing facilities and services comparable to other communities.
The parks and recreation advisory board approved of this item during a special called meeting held on August 25, 2009, and the City Commission formally adopted the study during a regular meet on September 1, 2009. The city is in the process of exploring funding opportunities for the construction of a new aquatic facility that would be designed based on the needs of the community, as well as availability of funds. The preliminary conceptual design includes a leisure swimming pool, a 25 yard competition swimming pool, a meandering lazy river, a children’s pool, a 150’ body waterslide, and a 200’ inner-tube waterslide.
